Gerber Guaranteed Life Insurance Review & Rates

Written by Jeff Root

As with all of our company and guaranteed issue policy reviews, we cover the strengths and weaknesses of the company and the high-risk product they offer. The goal of this Gerber guaranteed life insurance review is to help you, the consumer, decide if Gerber is the right fit for you.

When shopping for life insurance, always keep in mind that the best policy is one that fits your individual needs. No matter what, there is no one-size-fits-all policy on the market, even for high-risk candidates. Policies can and are very similar to one another, but there’s more to it than just the policy facts. This is why we include information about the carriers, their ratings, application process, customer service and more in our reviews.

Ultimately, it is up to you to decide which plan is the best and we are here to help you make sense of all the information.

About Gerber Life Insurance

If you’ve already read our article about the 3 best guaranteed life insurance companies, you’ll know that we love Gerber.

Gerber Life found its start more than 45 years ago when it became a separate affiliate company to Gerber Products Company, the same trusted household brand responsible for baby food and products. Today, Gerber Life has more than $33 billion in life insurance in force and over 2.9 million policies throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Over the years, Gerber has become a household name offering plans for every family member, including children. When a family is interested in streamlining the insurance process for every member, Gerber Life Insurance is a strong choice.

Gerber Life Insurance Company Ratings

Gerber has carried a strong rating of “A” or Excellent with A.M. Best Rating since May 2016. This is the 3rd best rating available and far superior to many carriers that also feature guaranteed issue products.

Currently, Gerber has assets under management of more than $2 billion with the majority of the company’s portfolio in high-quality investments. This means that Gerber is financially strong and able to meet the needs of its customers when claims are filed.

Pros of Gerber Guaranteed Life Insurance

There are many advantages to choosing Gerber for guaranteed acceptance life insurance. Below we will list each pro and explain why it might benefit you.

Guaranteed Issue Policy

The Gerber Guaranteed Life Plan is guaranteed issue meaning there are no medical exam hoops to jump through, no underwriting or health questions on the application. Everyone can qualify for this product as long as you fall within the age range and enter into a legally binding contract. Since there are no health questions on the application, you are under no obligation to tell your insurance agent or the carrier anything about your current or past health standing. Even your past reports will go unchecked.

Whole Life Policy

The plan is also a whole life insurance plan meaning that the coverage will last for your entire life. As long as you continue to make premium payments, your policy will be in-force.

Since it is a whole life policy, the plan also builds cash value. A portion of the funds from your premium payment will go into a cash account that can be borrowed against and used to pay premiums for a period of time. This might come in handy if hard financial times hit one month and you cannot pay your premium.

Gerber is a Reputable & Financially Stable Company

When it comes to the plan itself, the Gerber Guaranteed Life Plan is a fairly typical policy in terms of features and benefits. What really sets it apart is that it’s backed by an excellent life insurance carrier with a strong balance sheet and reputable brand name. This is a company that you can put your faith into and trust that your beneficiary will receive the necessary funds to cover your burial and final expenses.

Graded Death Benefit

This plan features a two-year graded death benefit with 10% interest if death occurs from natural causes within the period. If the insured dies due to an accidental death, the full face amount will be paid no matter when death occurs. Once the 2 years is over, there is no longer this limitation and the full face amount will be paid no matter the cause of death, including suicide.

Product Availability

Gerber Guaranteed Life is available for people between the ages of 50 and 80 in quantities that range from $5,000 all the way up to $25,000. With Gerber, you are able to take out multiple policies, but the cumulative total cannot surpass $25,000. You may be delighted to know that this amount is currently not subject to federal income tax when paid to your beneficiary.

Competitive Premiums & Payment Options

When selecting a guaranteed acceptance policy, the cost will always be one of the key determining factors.

Generally speaking, there isn’t a huge variety of policy features across carriers, which is why it always comes down to price.

We also understand that most people qualified for a no questions policy are on a fixed income and unable to pay exorbitant monthly premiums.

Gerber Life is known for their competitive pricing, although they are little more expensive than other guaranteed acceptance plans. These premiums, however, are fixed and will never increase on you.

Be Aware: Unfortunately, there are some plans on the market where premiums increase every 5 years. This is definitely not the case with Gerber.

Payment of premiums is notably flexible with Gerber and there are discounts for certain methods. You can pay by direct billing, debit, credit, or ACH (preauthorized checking). As of today, when you pay by ACH, you can get a discount up to 8%. This level of savings can definitely add up over time.

Easy Application Process

One of Gerber’s strengths as a company is their streamlined, digital application process. The entire application takes place over the phone with an independent agent who is appointed with Gerber and licensed in your state.

The information needed is very basic and relates to the insured, the owner and the beneficiary. The policy can be electronically signed in a matter of minutes and delivered directly to your inbox.

During the application process, one of the unique features of Gerber is that the owner of the policy can be different from the insured. For example, an adult child can own the policy on their father, but the father is the insured.

Cons of Gerber Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance

Gerber is a great option for life insurance so there are very few drawbacks when choosing Gerber Life Insurance. However not every policy is perfect, and we do have one potential setback.

No Riders & Accelerated Death Benefits

Unfortunately, Gerber Life does not offer any accelerated death benefits or riders. So if you or a loved one feels strongly towards critical illness or terminal illness protection, AIG would be the stronger choice.
